Do I Need Two Wedding Photographers?
Why Having a Second Photographer on Your Wedding Day Is a Game-Changer
When you’re planning your wedding, there are so many decisions to make. From choosing your dream venue to finding the perfect photographer, you want to know that every penny you invest is going to make your day as special as possible.
One question I’m often asked as a Surrey wedding photographer is, “Do we really need a second photographer?”
And honestly? If you want to capture more of the moments, emotions and little details that make your wedding uniquely yours, having a second photographer can make a huge difference.
Here’s why...
1. Two places at once (yes, really!)
Wedding mornings are full of excitement, happy nerves and those lovely little moments you might not even realise are happening. While I’m with you capturing the final touches, champagne toasts and hugs with your favourite people, a second photographer can be with your partner, documenting their morning too. Think buttonholes being pinned, a nervous laugh with their best mate, or that moment they realise they’re actually getting married today!
Instead of hearing about what happened while you were apart, you’ll have photographs that tell both sides of your story. And trust me, seeing what your partner was up to while you were getting ready can be pretty special.
2. Double the perspectives, double the emotion
Your wedding ceremony will probably fly by in a blur. One minute you’re walking down the aisle, and the next you’re being congratulated by everyone you love!
With two photographers, we can capture different perspectives of those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
While I’m focusing on you walking down the aisle, your second photographer could be capturing your partner’s reaction. During the ceremony, one of us might photograph the two of you exchanging vows, while the other captures the happy tears, proud smiles and emotional reactions from your guests.
These are the moments that make your wedding gallery about so much more than how everything looked. They show how it felt.

3. More candid moments you might otherwise miss
Some of my favourite wedding photographs happen when nobody is looking at the camera.
It’s the belly laughs during drinks reception, the unexpected hugs, your nan having the time of her life on the dancefloor, or your friends getting a little too enthusiastic with their dance moves!
With two photographers, there’s more opportunity to document these moments as they naturally unfold. While one of us is capturing your couple portraits or group photographs, the other can keep an eye on everything else happening around you.
Of course, no photographer can be everywhere at once, and a second photographer won’t guarantee that every single moment is captured. But having an extra pair of eyes gives us more opportunities to tell the full story of your day.

Is a second wedding photographer worth it?
If you’re investing so much time, effort and love into creating your dream wedding, it’s worth thinking about how you want to remember it. A second photographer can be particularly valuable if you’re getting ready in separate locations, having a large wedding, or simply love the idea of seeing more reactions and perspectives throughout the day.
That said, it isn’t essential for every wedding. The right choice depends on your plans, timings and priorities, so it’s always worth chatting through your options with your photographer.
At Pettitt Photography, my aim is to capture the genuine moments, big emotions and beautifully chaotic in between bits that make your wedding yours. Having a second photographer can help us tell even more of that story. Because long after the flowers have wilted and the confetti has been swept away, your photographs are what help you relive it all.
And future you? I reckon they’ll be pretty grateful. 🤍
